Madrid, September 29th, 2011. Scimago Lab just released Scimago Institutions Rankings World Report 2011, the third edition of its Ranking of Worldwide Research Institutions. This is the world broadest coverage ranking showing the research outcomes of 3.042 institutions worldwide. Through a rigorous process of institution identification and disambiguation, the report gathers all those universities and research-focused institution around the world which published at least 100 scientific documents in scholarly journals in 2009, and then analyzes their scientific output during the period 2005-09 in the database Scopus, from the giant Elsevier. The extent of scientific output that has been analyzed overtakes 80% of the world in such period.

This year's edition introduces two new indicators aiming at providing a broader insight of the research performance of analyzed institutions. The Specialization Index indicates the extent of thematic specialization of institutions by analyzing the scientific fields where they do research and the number of scientific papers they publish in each of those fields. The second indicator, the Excellence Rate indicates the proportion of an institution's scientific output in the set formed by the papers with the highest impact in their respective fields of science. Below the list of the six indicators included together with brief descriptions:

The indicators showed on the report are:

  • Output, measured as the number of scientific papers according to Scopus.
  • International Collaboration, measured as the ratio of scientific documents an institution publishes in collaboration with foreign institutions.
  • Normalized Impact, as the citation rate an institution receives compared to the World Average (according to the normalized citation indicator developed at Karolinska Instituet in Sweden)
  • Publication Rate into the 25% of "Best Journals" according to SJR indicator developed by SCImago Research Group.
  • Specialization Index, value indicating the thematic concentration (close to 1)/dispersion (close to 0) of an institution's scientific output.
  • Excelence Rate, proportion of an institution's scientific output found in the set formed by the 10% of the highly cited papers in their respective fields.

In addition, the regular features on SIR World Reports include grouping institutions within countries, world regions and institutional sectors composed of Higher Education, Government, Health-related Institutions, Companies and Others.

Iberoamerican Ranking SIR 2011

  • The most complete Research Ranking of HEIs in Iberoamerica; it includes 1,369 HEIs from 42 countries from the region.
  • It analyzes key research dimensions: scientific output, internationalization and scientific impact.
  • New features in this edition: indicators' variation rate and HEIs classification by scientific impact.
  • 2nd. Edition of this annual report edited by Scimago Lab.
  • Published in English, Spanish and Portuguese.

Scimago Lab has just released the 2nd. Edition of the Iberoamerican Ranking SIR, this release covers, for the first time, all the HEIs in the Iberoamerican region (Latin-America plus Spain and Portugal). Specifically 1,369 institutions are included; all those which published at least one scientific communication during the period of analysis 2005-2009 as collected by worldwide scientific database leader Scopus . This edition of the report is presented in three languages: English, Spanish and Portuguese .

The report, composed as a multi-valued ranking table , shows four key indicators revealing the research performance of institutions by providing an evaluation framework to research activity. The first one; the Scientific Output (O), measured as the number of scientific documents published by each HEI, establishes the ranking order. The table also shows the International Collaboration Index (IC), Normalized Impact (NI) and the ratio of Publication in Best Journals (Q1) which respectively indicate the internationalization degree, scientific impact and HEIs' ability to publish their research in the most prestigious journals.

This edition includes a set of new features that enhance the report data quantity and quality. It includes the Variation Rate with respect to the value for the period 2004-2008 for each indicator. It also classifies HEIs according to their scientific impact into three groups:

  • The first group, showing a green label, is formed by those HEIs with a Normalized Impact (that is Scientific Impact Average) equal or higher than the World Average (values 1 or higher in the table)
  • The second one, with a yellow label, includes all those which their NI is lower than the World Average (values between 0,5 and 1)
  • And last, with a red label, all those HEIs presenting limited visibility to the international scientific community (values lower than 0,5)

As it has been pointed in the former release of the Iberoamerican Ranking SIR 2011, this report series is intended as an evaluation and benchmarking tool of the research activity carried out at Iberoamerican HEIs. It was devised to reach a wide range of users, including:

  • Policymakers, responsible for Science, Technology and Innovation programs and schedules in the Iberoamerican region.
  • HEIs Managers responsible for assigning resources at institutions.
  • Media interested in informing on R&D and Innovation Policies.
  • Researchers involved in Bibliometrics and Scientometrics.

"In this new edition we focused our efforts on reaching high accuracy in the cleaning and refinement of raw data, especially those related to authors' affiliations" said Felix de Moya, Main Researcher at SCImago Research Group. "The goal is to guarantee that the exposed scores capture institutions' research outcomes properly"

Through the abovementioned process of data cleaning and institutions' identification and disambiguation, SIR World Report 2010 collects those institutions which published at least 100 papers in scholarly journals in 2008 and analyzes their scientific output during the period 2004-08 included in the largest scientific literature database, Scopus from Elsevier. The scientific literature volume analyzed covers over 80% of the world scientific literature for the term 04-08.

"The current report constitutes a top-notch and robust evaluation resource to carry out comparative analyses of the research structures of worldwide Research Institutions" said Felix de Moya.
