Mission: Universidad de La Serena is a regional university of the State of Chile, committed to the Coquimbo Region, which focuses on the areas of science, technology, humanities and social sciences. It mainly develops training programs for professionals and postgraduates, giving priority to its quality both in the academic and in the value, and promoting in its students a critical vision and responsibility towards their environment. It contributes to the generation of knowledge through focused research, preferably associated with regional themes, and through artistic creation. In the missionary aspect of the link with the environment, the University of La Serena contributes, from the diversity of its work, to the improvement of the processes of public and private institutions, to the preservation and dissemination of culture and social welfare.

The following data gives a quick reading on the scientific performance in the last years. The research ranking refers to the volume, impact and quality of the institution's research output. The innovation ranking is calculated on the number of patent applications of the institution and the citations that its research output receives from patents. Finally, the societal ranking is based on the number of pages of the institution's website and the number of backlinks and mentions from social networks.
