Foundation: 1940
Mission: The University of Costa Rica is a higher education and cultural institution, constitutionally autonomous and democratic, made up of a community of professors, students and administrative staff, dedicated to teaching, research, social action, study, meditation, artistic creation and the dissemination of knowledge.
Vision: The aspirations of the institution are, first of all, to strengthen academic excellence through the development and permanent cultivation of a quality culture, with a close articulation between teaching, social action and research and through the updating of the curricula in undergraduate and graduate studies in all its university sites, the generation of innovative careers, continuous improvement and high-level training of academic and administrative staff, in order to meet, in a relevant manner, the needs of Costa Rican society and to enhance its leadership in the development of national education. Secondly, to enhance the generation of scientific, technological, socio-cultural and innovative knowledge in all units of the University and between disciplines, as well as to join international academic networks, based on mutual recognition, respect and shared benefits, with a view to strengthening academic culture. Thirdly, to promote integration, alliances, social commitment, cooperation, solidarity, the dissemination of university work and innovation in order to forge new spaces, with the aim of transferring and exchanging the knowledge generated between the University and society. Fourthly, to promote the democratization of entry to higher education through programs that favor equity and social inclusion and, at the same time, to promote initiatives to strengthen support services for the student population, in order to facilitate the permanence and successful completion of their studies in the institution. Finally, to promote international solidarity through the development of academic networks and the mobility of teachers, students and administrative staff, as well as to update the mechanisms and platforms of university management, ensuring environmental sustainability, technological leadership and modernity of physical infrastructure, in order to enhance relevance, efficiency and accountability.

The following data gives a quick reading on the scientific performance in the last years. The research ranking refers to the volume, impact and quality of the institution's research output. The innovation ranking is calculated on the number of patent applications of the institution and the citations that its research output receives from patents. Finally, the societal ranking is based on the number of pages of the institution's website and the number of backlinks and mentions from social networks.
The result of the evaluation of the institution can be compared to obtain a view of the country, the region to which it belongs and the institutions of the world, placing it in their respective positions.
