Mission: To train competent professionals in the technical, agricultural, pedagogical, economic, social, humanistic, exacting and physical culture sciences, through undergraduate education, continuous improvement and postgraduate, based on the development of science, technology and innovation, with quality, integrality and patriotism, in order to satisfy the demand of the central region and the country in general, for which it has adequate facilities and a human capital of high scientific and humanistic level and with tradition of excellence in its work.
Vision: We are a university of excellence, committed to the Cuban social project. We focus our actions on the construction of a prosperous and sustainable socialism approved by the Party Congress in the axes of development until 2013, and we contribute with results to the consolidation of the Cuban economic model. We train with quality and efficiency comprehensive professionals, with a deep humanistic sense, competent, cultured, bearers of our values and committed to the country. We have a revolutionary, excellent, innovative and stable faculty, with a broad general integral culture, solid ideological political preparation, motivated and capable of achieving the necessary transformations for the improvement of Cuban higher education. We satisfy the needs and demands for training and improvement of professionals and cadres, prioritizing the training of doctors. We achieve results in university science, technology and innovation, linked to the priorities of the territory which, together with the management of knowledge and innovation, impacts and contributes to the economic and social development of the province. Our cadres are prepared and motivated, they lead with a high sense of belonging, efficiently using the resources at our disposal in order to successfully achieve the objectives, stimulate and improve the working and living conditions.

The following data gives a quick reading on the scientific performance in the last years. The research ranking refers to the volume, impact and quality of the institution's research output. The innovation ranking is calculated on the number of patent applications of the institution and the citations that its research output receives from patents. Finally, the societal ranking is based on the number of pages of the institution's website and the number of backlinks and mentions from social networks.
The result of the evaluation of the institution can be compared to obtain a view of the country, the region to which it belongs and the institutions of the world, placing it in their respective positions.
