Mission: He main goal of the Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry is to uphold a uniquely close interaction between basic science, clinical research and clinical services in order to gain knowledge about and understanding of the causes of psychiatric disorders. This knowledge can then be applied to the development of novel diagnostic tools as well as therapeutic and preventive approaches. Stress- and trauma-related disorders, such as major depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, and anxiety disorders are our main research and clinical focus. The renowned hospital of the Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry is primarily concerned with diagnosis of, treatment of and research on stress-related disorders, whose incidence is increasing worldwide. As a non-profit research organization, it is important to us to be able to apply our scientific results when treating our patients without any delay. We are proud to rank among the world’s leading institutions. The basic research of our institute is closely connected with clinical research and treatment. Cutting-edge research in the areas of genetics, proteomics and metabolomics are combined with clinical imaging methods and measurement of brain functions. Besides the optimization of current treatments, our results help to develop novel therapies and drugs for the personalized medicine of the future. Our traditional treatment focus lies on stress-related disorders, such as affective disorders (depression) and anxiety disorders, sleep disorders, personal crises as well as psychoses/schizophrenia, various forms of dementia, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease and hormonal (endocrine) disorders. Our hospital can be found in the heart of Schwabing in Munich, located between Luitpoldpark and the English Garden. It consists of five in-patient wards with a total 120 beds and an additional capacity of 34 day-clinic spaces amounting to around 2,000 day patients per year. The hospital, the day-clinic and the numerous outpatient clinics allow for an integrated treatment approach and a fast and seamless transition from outpatient care to day patient or inpatient care and viceversa.

Ranks by Subject areas/categories

We have divided the scientific output of the institution into 19 large areas of knowledge and the following table shows only the ranks in different territorial domains achieved by the institution in each of the areas. For an institution to have a presence in an area, it is necessary that it exceed in the last year a minimum output threshold equivalent to twice the percentage that this area represents in the world. If you need scientific indicators on these areas visit Scopus and/or SciVal.
