Foundation: 2002

Mission: ICB's mission is the chemical study of biological systems to understand their functioning at the molecular level and explore new technological applications. The personnel working there express expertise in the development of molecules and processes of biological interest in areas between basic chemistry and biology through multi- and interdisciplinary strategies. In the diversity of the methodologies used and the objectives set, the research activity carried out there is focused on organic molecules and their biological properties, seen as: a. Tiles of a "puzzle" of increasing complexity, from the single metabolic stage to interactions between organisms; b. Tools to obtain a desired biological effect and exploit metabolic processes of biotechnological interest. Cultural, social and economic context of incidence In general, the activities of researchers are located in the nationally and/or internationally recognized areas of organic and bioorganic chemistry, "chemical biology" and fermentation chemistry, making use of a wide and complementary range of expertise in spectroscopic/biostructural, synthetic, biochemical, computational, microbiological, pharmacological, nutraceutical and bioenergetic fields. The individual activities are synergistically integrated within the institute while making use of a network of external collaborations at national and international level. They, in fact, allow an analysis at various levels of complexity, from different points of view and directed to the widest possible range of applications, ranging from the pure acquisition of knowledge on the systems under examination (basic research, "curiosity-driven") to the development of applications in fields of high social utility and with considerable potential economic spin-offs, such as: o Health (development of new active ingredients, understanding of physiological and pathological mechanisms); o Energy (development of bio-fuels or, more generally, of renewable biological resources for energy production); o The environment (understanding and combating biological invasion by alien species, reuse of potentially polluting industrial waste); o The agro-food industry (study and improvement of species of food interest, extraction and characterization of active ingredients with application to nutraceuticals or cosmetics).

Evolution of the institution

The following data gives a quick reading on the scientific performance in the last years. The research ranking refers to the volume, impact and quality of the institution's research output. The innovation ranking is calculated on the number of patent applications of the institution and the citations that its research output receives from patents. Finally, the societal ranking is based on the number of pages of the institution's website and the number of backlinks and mentions from social networks.

Compared to its context

The result of the evaluation of the institution can be compared to obtain a view of the country, the region to which it belongs and the institutions of the world, placing it in their respective positions.

Ranks by Subject areas/categories

We have divided the scientific output of the institution into 19 large areas of knowledge and the following table shows only the ranks in different territorial domains achieved by the institution in each of the areas. For an institution to have a presence in an area, it is necessary that it exceed in the last year a minimum output threshold equivalent to twice the percentage that this area represents in the world. If you need scientific indicators on these areas visit Scopus and/or SciVal.
