Mission: The INO was born from the aggregation of the National Institute of Applied Optics (INOA), with its offices in Florence, Naples and Lecce, a part of the Institute for Physical-Chemical Processes (IPCF) in Pisa and the Bose-Einstein Condensation Centre (BEC) in Trento, with its articulation at the LENS in Florence. This involves the integration of highly complementary research topics in the field of Optics, in the broadest and most modern sense of the term. The INO comprises diversified activities, ranging from fundamental research to services to high technological content. This wide range of activities makes INO highly competitive in the acquisition of research projects, guaranteeing continuity in the offer of research and development activities to companies and public bodies both in the short and medium-long term.

The following data gives a quick reading on the scientific performance in the last years. The research ranking refers to the volume, impact and quality of the institution's research output. The innovation ranking is calculated on the number of patent applications of the institution and the citations that its research output receives from patents. Finally, the societal ranking is based on the number of pages of the institution's website and the number of backlinks and mentions from social networks.
