Mission: As an Inter-University Research Institute which is an organization that promotes collaboration and shared utilization of resources among universities, the National Institute for Physiological Sciences has a threefold mission, and intends to continue working in these directions in the future. The first mission of the National Institute for Physiological Sciences is conducting pioneering research at every level, from molecules to cells, tissues, organs, and entire organisms, as well as organically integrating the results of this research at various levels in order to elucidate the functions of the body and their mechanisms. The second mission of the National Institute for Physiological Sciences is promoting collaborative research among other organizations, including national, public, and private universities nationwide, as well as promoting the shared use of advanced research facilities, equipment, databases, research methods, and meeting facilities nationwide. The third mission of the National Institute for Physiological Sciences is nurturing graduate students and young researchers, to help them become international researchers in the physiological sciences, by taking responsibility for those specializing in physiological sciences in the School of Life Sciences at the Graduate University of Advanced Studies (SOKENDAI), and by organizing training courses and various educational lectures. This also involves supplying personnel to universities and research organizations nationwide. Additionally, the institute identifies and develops future young researchers through partnership activities, and by providing educational scientific information for elementary and junior high school students about the functions of the human body and their mechanisms.

The following data gives a quick reading on the scientific performance in the last years. The research ranking refers to the volume, impact and quality of the institution's research output. The innovation ranking is calculated on the number of patent applications of the institution and the citations that its research output receives from patents. Finally, the societal ranking is based on the number of pages of the institution's website and the number of backlinks and mentions from social networks.
The result of the evaluation of the institution can be compared to obtain a view of the country, the region to which it belongs and the institutions of the world, placing it in their respective positions.
We have divided the scientific output of the institution into 19 large areas of knowledge and the following table shows only the ranks in different territorial domains achieved by the institution in each of the areas. For an institution to have a presence in an area, it is necessary that it exceed in the last year a minimum output threshold equivalent to twice the percentage that this area represents in the world. If you need scientific indicators on these areas visit Scopus and/or SciVal.
Area | World | Asiatic Region | OECD | Japan |
