Mission: A Strategic Plan begins by defining the mission of the institution, and in this case explains why, for what purpose and for whom the UEx is carrying out its activity. This definition is important because it sets the basic orientation of what is done and what should be done. The UEx is a public institution committed to society, whose mission is the comprehensive training of people through the creation and dissemination of knowledge and culture through quality teaching and research, with a vocation for intellectual and cultural leadership. The UEx is also a fundamental element in the development of Extremadura's society and finds its raison d'être in the search for excellence and in the national and international projection of its actions. The EUx fulfils its functions guided by the values of freedom, pluralism, participation and equality. It tries to adapt its services to the social demand and to the best fulfillment of the functions entrusted to it in article 1.6 of its Statutes, (Decree 65/2003, of May 8, by which the Statutes of the University of Extremadura are approved, modified by Decree 190/2010). Although the statement of the plan's mission makes explicit the direction that the University should give to its objectives and actions, it is appropriate to complete its definition with the principles on which it is based. Thus, the actions to be carried out on the basis of the Plan should be interpreted in accordance with the following principles, so that they serve as a reference for them without contravening them: Quality To achieve in the areas of work of the EUx the objectives established and goals set, optimising the time and technical, human and economic resources required for this purpose. Entrepreneurship To guide the university community, and students in particular, towards the implementation of entrepreneurial actions that promote initiatives for the joint development of society. Coexistence in diversity To promote values such as respect for people and ideas, tolerance, solidarity, freedom of thought, dialogue, gender equality and intercultural integration, as well as respect and care for people with disabilities and all those at risk of social exclusion. Social Responsibility To promote the collective and individual commitment of responsibility to society through the professional practice of the University Community, with a responsible use of resources and with sustainability criteria that improves the welfare and enriches the social and cultural environment. Transparency Create and promote permanent and fluid channels of communication and information exchange with the entire university community to encourage greater direct and active participation in public management. Effort To clearly emphasize the effort and commitment, indispensable pillars to achieve the objectives set, both academic and personal. Teamwork Work cooperatively and collaboratively to achieve common goals on the basis of mutual trust and respect, fostering a critical spirit. Diversity and equity To conceive in an equitable way all the disciplines represented in the University. Those who cultivate them must be able to appreciate the contributions of others, thus producing an equal reciprocity between the fields of knowledge. Accountability Act according to the principles of performance evaluation and accountability, principles that are essential for the proper functioning of the institutions. Internationalization To contribute to a standardization of the international character in all aspects of university life.
Vision: The EUx strategy for the period 2014-2018 is summarised in the following vision: The UEx must be a pioneering university, which develops its own model of identity with quality teaching, proximity to students, maximum internationalisation and a firm and clear focus on research, innovation and its consequent transfer. Thus, the UEx aspires to: To be a public university of recognized teaching and research prestige, which seeks specialization as a sign of identity. To be an innovative and enterprising University, with the capacity to adapt due to its flexibility and with a growing international projection both in the areas with which it has been historically most linked (Latin America and the EUROACE region), as well as with other emerging areas. To constitute a motor for the development of society, in close collaboration with its socio-economic environment, with an educational offer adapted to the needs of the labour market that leads it to be recognised for its capacity to understand the environment and its changes, as well as for generating new ideas and viable solutions from study and scientific research. To serve as a dynamic element of culture in its immediate environment, allowing access to continuous training throughout life and the evolution towards a better world, with equal opportunities and a growing awareness of environmental sustainability. Likewise, it must be a University Community committed to society, which applies Social Responsibility criteria to its activity and generates a working environment that makes the best development of its team's professional life possible.

The following data gives a quick reading on the scientific performance in the last years. The research ranking refers to the volume, impact and quality of the institution's research output. The innovation ranking is calculated on the number of patent applications of the institution and the citations that its research output receives from patents. Finally, the societal ranking is based on the number of pages of the institution's website and the number of backlinks and mentions from social networks.
The result of the evaluation of the institution can be compared to obtain a view of the country, the region to which it belongs and the institutions of the world, placing it in their respective positions.
We have divided the scientific output of the institution into 19 large areas of knowledge and the following table shows only the ranks in different territorial domains achieved by the institution in each of the areas. For an institution to have a presence in an area, it is necessary that it exceed in the last year a minimum output threshold equivalent to twice the percentage that this area represents in the world. If you need scientific indicators on these areas visit Scopus and/or SciVal.
