Foundation: 1972
Mission: The University of Málaga is an institution of public law, which generates and transmits knowledge, and provides higher education services through teaching, study and research in an environment characterized by technological, cultural and tourist activity. It was created in 1972 following the initiative of a popular movement that resulted in the constitution of the citizen's platform "Friends of the University of Málaga". It is a dynamic and innovative University, socially recognised for its prestige and leadership, open and participative at the service of society, committed to quality and excellence, with lifelong learning, integrated into the European Higher Education and Research Area, concerned with professional insertion, linked to the business world, the Andalusian Technology Park and the public sector, competitive and outstanding in the Andalusian, national and international environment, as well as oriented towards the global and knowledge society.

The following data gives a quick reading on the scientific performance in the last years. The research ranking refers to the volume, impact and quality of the institution's research output. The innovation ranking is calculated on the number of patent applications of the institution and the citations that its research output receives from patents.
