Mission: The COMSATS Institute of Information Technology founded in the belief that understanding enriches all people, is dedicated to the search for truth through advancement of learning and extending the frontiers of knowledge; to the sharing of this knowledge through education in an academically diverse range of disciplines and subjects; and to the application of this knowledge to benefit the people of Pakistan, in particular, and the Muslim Ummah, and the world, at large. The Institute’s mission is threefold: Research and Discovery: Generate and preserving knowledge, understanding, and creativity by triggering enquiry, conducting high-quality research and promoting scholarship, that benefits students, scholars, and communities across the country, the Muslim Ummah and the world, at large. Teaching and Learning: Share that knowledge, understanding, and creativity by providing a broad range of educational programs in a diverse community of learners and teachers, and prepare graduate, professional, and undergraduate students, as well as non-degree-seeking students interested in continuing education and lifelong learning, for active roles in competitive and culturally diverse environs. Outreach and Public Service: Extend, apply, and exchange knowledge between the Institute and society by applying scholarly expertise to social and technological problems, by helping organizations and individuals respond to their changing environments and by making the knowledge and resources created and preserved at the Institute accessible to the citizens. Using the resources of its multiple campuses in an integrated fashion, the institute vies to strengthen the services to the state through education of a modern work force, research and development, technology commercialization, and establishing and promoting partnerships with business, government and community groups.
Vision: The COMSATS Institute of Information Technology envisions assuming a truly national character for itself in the year to come. It envisions having presence in all provinces of the country. It sees for itself a position among the top five (5) universities in the country; among top 100 universities in the developing countries and top 500 universities in the world respectively in the 5, 10 and 15 years time horizon. Focus in the period 2005–10 will be on science led engineering; in the period 2010–15 on initiating Social Sciences programs and in the period 2015–20, on establishing programs in medical and agricultural sciences.

The following data gives a quick reading on the scientific performance in the last years. The research ranking refers to the volume, impact and quality of the institution's research output. The innovation ranking is calculated on the number of patent applications of the institution and the citations that its research output receives from patents. Finally, the societal ranking is based on the number of pages of the institution's website and the number of backlinks and mentions from social networks.
The result of the evaluation of the institution can be compared to obtain a view of the country, the region to which it belongs and the institutions of the world, placing it in their respective positions.
We have divided the scientific output of the institution into 19 large areas of knowledge and the following table shows only the ranks in different territorial domains achieved by the institution in each of the areas. For an institution to have a presence in an area, it is necessary that it exceed in the last year a minimum output threshold equivalent to twice the percentage that this area represents in the world.
