Mission: Howard University, a culturally diverse, comprehensive, research intensive and historically Black private university, provides an educational experience of exceptional quality at the undergraduate, graduate, and professional levels to students of high academic standing and potential, with particular emphasis upon educational opportunities for Black students. Moreover, the University is dedicated to attracting and sustaining a cadre of faculty who are, through their teaching, research and service, committed to the development of distinguished, historically aware, and compassionate graduates and to the discovery of solutions to human problems in the United States and throughout the world. With an abiding interest in both domestic and international affairs, the University is committed to continuing to produce leaders for America and the global community.

Vision: The research vision at Howard University Health Sciences is to expand and develop research in the biomedical sciences to its full potential, with an emphasis on innovation that advocates for the elimination of health disparities. Because a major component of health disparities are caused by non-medical and health care factors, research emphasis will focus on social determinants of health and clinical effectiveness research. These foci will be facilitated through the development of partnerships with the University of Maryland School of Public Health and The Satcher-Cobb Leadership Institute at Howard University (which is in the stage of feasibility testing). Basic cellular and molecular approaches to cures for diseases will be complemented by incorporation of new interdisciplinary research areas, such as bioinformatics, molecular imaging, computational biology, nanotechnology, proteomics and genomics.

Ranks by Subject areas/categories

We have divided the scientific output of the institution into 19 large areas of knowledge and the following table shows only the ranks in different territorial domains achieved by the institution in each of the areas. For an institution to have a presence in an area, it is necessary that it exceed in the last year a minimum output threshold equivalent to twice the percentage that this area represents in the world. If you need scientific indicators on these areas visit Scopus and/or SciVal.
