Mission: The mission of the State University of Rio de Janeiro is to promote and disseminate the knowledge of science and technology, culture and the arts, through teaching, research and extension, within benchmarks of excellence in all fields of knowledge, maintaining an environment of respect for diversity and free debate of ideas, training professionals capable of constant critical learning, prepared to act based on ethical principles and with a view to the full exercise of citizenship, thus contributing to the sustainable development of society. As a public institution, its mission is based on principles of equality and plurality: it was also a forerunner in the implementation of the system for reserving entrance tickets via vestibular.

The following data gives a quick reading on the scientific performance in the last years. The research ranking refers to the volume, impact and quality of the institution's research output.
